Montaione è sinonimo di artigianato di altissima qualità. Di antica tradizione è la lavorazione della terracotta e della ceramica grazie alla presenza, particolarmente in questa zona della Toscana, di argilla abbondante e di buona qualità.
Nel centro del paese si possono trovare ceramiche dipinte a mano ed assistere alle fasi della pittura dei manufatti. Altro mestiere tradizionale è quello della lavorazione delle pietre dure, in particolare dell’onice, di cui rimane un unico maestro che tramanda, proprio come una volta, l’antico sapere ai figli e ad alcuni operai specializzati.
Attività florida del passato era l’arte e la lavorazione del vetro: divenuta centrale fin dal 1200, ha mantenuto una lunga tradizione grazie alla presenza di boschi che garantivano grandi quantità di legna per alimentare le fornaci per la produzione di bicchieri, boccali, bottiglie e fiaschi.
Oggi alcune delle antiche fabbriche e fornaci per il vetro sono state trasformate in agriturismi: esiste luogo più tipico in cui trascorrere una vacanza?
Montaione has a long tradition of high qualified handicraft. First of all, the manufacturing of earthenware and ceramic thank to the presence, particularly in this part of Tuscany, of big quantity of clay. In the centre of this village you can find many artistic objects and observe the painting process.
Another typical craft is the semiprecious stone work, especially onyx: nowadays there is just one artisan to hand down his knowledge to his children and trained workers. In past times Montaione was famous for glass. This craft became prosperous since 1200 thanks to the presence of plentiful woods that guaranteed big amounts of brushwood to feed the furnaces for the production of glasses, bottles and flasks.
Today some of these glassworks have been transformed in beautiful agritourism: can you imagine a more typical place to spend your holiday?
